Good evening from a glorious sunny day here in Meinopilgino on the Chucotka peninsular. Well the sun finally showed itself at 22:00 hrs last night and has shined down throughout the whole day from a beautiful blue sky above with just the odd whispy cloud floating through. It still remained cold though but once in a sheltered spot, out of the wind you actually feel the warmth of the sun on the face. The chopper also came today and this is the first time it has been able to fly here due to the weather since our own arrival. The day's are drifting by now and what with the near on constant day-light hours they easily roll in to one and I am finding myself loosing track of the correct day of the week.Today I headed off in to the morane hills with Nigel and his good sense of humour makes me laugh as he now relates ourselves to the movie "The lord of the Rings" climbing in to the Morane Hills, with just bread in our bags, drinking water from streams and I even ate Goose the other day but was told to mind the bits of lead shot, however we are not trying to save mankind. So with out further delay I am now going to start to upload some shots. Photo above shows a locally flag ringed Dunlin (Lime green = this area)Bird above was the second bird I saw here and this female was part of a pair with the male giving a full display song in flight above. A truly amazing moment, It really was just superb, first hearing him singing away and then getting ever closer until you could see him flying above with hovering wings, breeding plumage and that spatulate bill all clearly visible above!
Photo above shows another pair but this time on the fresh water pools and the photo below, well this one is for Jaffa, quite an orange one don't you think ? So Sam still think of them as a Sanderling with a flat bill ? and as for you Vincent, Still say they are over rated ?? The Tundra on the morane hills is alive with the first flowers visible (photo below) and the colours are real beautiful in the different shades of light from the sun. I really enjoyed the walk today and I would upload more Spoon billed Sandpiper photos but I am tired and my legs and back are aching from all the constant daily treks so it is long hot soak for me. More tomorrow..
